This is an interesting beer that was referred to me by a friend back in Ohio. From what I understand, this beer has been contract brewed for Kroger grocery stores, and is in the early stages of getting on their shelves. Originally Wisconsin and Ohio were the only places you could get this, but it has been popping up in Tennessee, Florida, California, Maine, and other states. Read on and see what I thought about it.
Ken's ReviewTaste: B+ Taste definitely bodes well for this beer, especially if you like a little bitterness. The initial taste kind of feels like a beer you've had before, but then changes to one that is pretty unique. Overall the taste is pretty decent, and it leaves only a very mild aftertaste. It could be a little bit smoother to move it into an "A" grade range, but overall no real complaints in this department. Packaging: A I am a big fan of the packaging on this beer. It has old-style "paper" labels. The label around the top of the bottle reads "Celebrating the Repeal of Prohibition 1933". The bottom label reads "Tap Room No. 21 Brewing Company" in big red letters, then "Moe's Backroom Pale Ale" at the bottom. I like the feel of this label, as it gives off the times of the 1930's. Value: B+ Value isn't too hateful on this beer. I bought a six-pack for $6.49 after a $1 off special. For $7.49 a six-pack, ranks with the costs of a Corona or Sam Adams sixer. Overall for the taste and "rare" nature of this beer, $7.49 really isn't too bad. Drunkeness: B This one is an interesting subject when it comes to this beer. The label actually reads "5-7% Alc by Vol". So I guess depending on what part of the barrel you got when they filled these up, you could get drunk quicker, or at a regular pace...? I've never personally had more than two of these at a time, but after three or four you can get a really good buzz going. Overall: B+ Despite being a limited find, this beer is well worth a try if you have the opportunity. Fans of a little bitterness and a rich taste will really like this one, but those who like the smoother brews may not. Either way I highly recommend giving this one a try.
