Molson CanOne a recent trip to Canada, I decided to pick up a bunch of Canadian brews to bring back and sample. While most of them were of the microbrew type, I decided to go ahead and give some good ol’ Canadian macro brewing a shot. Actually, one of the reasons I was drawn to this was the 750 mL can. I was planning on pounding this down in my hotel room, but ran out of time, so Ken got the honor of sampling it with me on a recent night.

Taste: B- I’m not actually too sure what to put in this field as the beer didn’t really have a lot of taste. While it did have a hint of flavor unlike most American macros, it certainly wasn’t hoppy or malty and didn’t really stand out. It certainly wasn’t offensive so that gets it more than a C, but I want some flavor if I’m going above a B-.

Packaging: B- Again, not much to write home on this front. It is a pretty basic can with Molson lettering and a picture or two of a maple leaf and some other designs. It did gain a few points by having everything in French as well as English, in typical Canadian fashion. Also, the size of the can was pretty impressive at a hefty 750 mL. However, I would recommend a glass as drinking out of a can this large proved to be a bit awkward.

Drunkenness: B Again, the Molson falls in the middle of the road category at 5%. While above some macros, it sure isn’t going to get you wasted quick, which I’m sure we will all agree is the point of drinking low end beer. Maybe during the planning phases, they said “Hell, we aren’t going to give them flavor and high alcohol, so might as well give them a big ass can!”

Value: B+ I don’t remember the exact price, but I think this came down to around $3 Canadian, which is less than that American. Not a bad price for a lot of beer so Molson achieves some higher marks in this area.

Overall: B Overall, this beer is pretty much in the middle like a lot of macrobrews. I’ll give the Canucks some credit for upping the ABV and taste over some American versions, but it certainly isn’t going to replace your favorite microbrew anytime soon. I’d say you best bet is to pick this up when you want some relatively cheap, but want to try something a little different and don’t mind drinking out of a massive can.
