Review of Bud Light Golden Wheat

We posted on this site several months ago that Bud Light Golden Wheat was being made and would be available this fall. Well, now it is and I finally had the chance to try some last night at a bar out on the SE side of Indy (for free). Budweiser has had a couple hits with me, but mostly misses, and considering I despise Bud Light and everything it stands for, I was really anxious to take this one and write a review to send it crashing down in flames. Read on to see if that mission was accomplished.
Ken's Review
Taste: B- Son of a bitch! I hate to say it, but Bud Light Golden Wheat was actually an okay beer. The taste is very light of wheat, and you don't really need an orange peel at all to get a nice smooth flavor from it. That being said, this has no business being put anywhere in the realm of a "real" wheat beer like Blue Moon. I find Bud Light to be a watered-down imitation beer, and Bud Light Golden Wheat is that same equivalent in the wheat beer world.
Packaging: C- Golden Wheat's packaging is crap. All it has is a generic-ass label like Bud Light does, with wheat strands behind a wanna-be-cool "BL" for Bud Light. Then "Golden Wheat" is printed on some font that is trying to be wheat-like. Not impressed.
Value: D I do not often give this low of a rating in the value category, but Bud Light Golden Wheat deserves this. I have seen this stuff in stores priced at around $7.49 a sixer. Bullshit! There is no reason that adding "wheat" to a crap beer like Bud Light gives you the right to charge anywhere in the vicinity of a real wheat beer, like you are trying to be a microbrew--which you aren't, and just about every microbrew kicks your ass in quality and taste, Budweiser! The next section will really piss you off when it comes to the price:
Drunkeness: D- Normally when you think of wheat beers, you are going to assume that it has a decent alcohol content, and therefore justifies paying a little bit more. Not here! Bud Light Golden Wheat's alcohol content? 4.1% I wish I was kidding, and actually had to go several places on the Internet to verify that the content listed on the packaging was correct. If you like watered-down wheat beers and/or don't like getting drunk from wheat beers, have at this one because it will probably be right up your alley then.
Overall: C Overall, Bud Light Golden Wheat was surprising in taste, but still can't be given decent marks in any of these categories because let's face it, it is Budweiser trying to act like a microbrew, and failing miserably. This is worth a try if you can find it for no more than $2.00 a bottle (good luck), but honestly it is better to throw down an extra buck or two and get something with substance, and most importantly, quality.
